Best practices for the conservation of traditional wooden boats

Itsasmuseum has published a guide to best practice for the conservation of traditional wooden boats, aimed particularly at people who own or wish to acquire wooden boats, but also at anyone with an interest in our maritime heritage. This pioneering document in the field is the result of the rigour, practical experience and knowledge accumulated over years of work in the conservation of historic boats at our shipwrights’ workshop, Erain.

The aim of this Handbook is to keep this legacy alive, highlighting not only its technical aspects but also its cultural, historical and emotional value.

It provides clear, informative and accessible criteria and guidance on restoring, conserving and maintaining these vessels, and has been published in six languages: Basque, Spanish, English, French, Catalan and Galician.

The Manual for the Conservation of Boats is available on our website, via the QR code below and in the museum shop, exclusively for members of the Itsasmuseum Community.
