The Estuary in Desert

Itsasmuseum is hosting, as part of the programme signed with the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, The Invited Work, The Estuary in Desert, a highly representative painting by the artist Adolfo Guiard. Painted in 1897, the work offers a very characteristic view of the Bilbao estuary from Punta Zorroza, on the left bank, which captures the dynamics of the city in the midst of its industrial transformation.

The composition is striking for the distribution of the elements in it, which are concentrated mainly on the margins of the work, with the intention of devoting most of the canvas to chromatic experimentation.

The Estuary in the Desert will be exhibited on the upper floor of the permanent exhibition, in the area dedicated to shipping companies and shipbuilding, in recognition of the 125th anniversary of the creation of ANAVAS, the Association of Basque Shipbuilders, which was practically at the same time as the work.

Guiard’s painting is the eighth Invited Work after the sculpture El Timonel by Quintín de Torre (c. 1913) and the paintings El grumete blanco (c. 1922-1924) by Julián de Tellaeche, Bilbo MMX (2010) by Jesus Mari Lazkano, El barco azul (1985-1986) by Mari Puri Herrero, Mal tiempo. Holanda (c. 1902) by Álvaro Alcalá Galiano, El puente de Burceña (c. 1925-1930) by Aurelio Arteta and Por las víctimas del mar (1914) by Valentín de Zubiaurre, which bids farewell with the arrival of this new work.
