Itsasmuseum extends free admission and updates its admission fees starting Tuesday, 14 October
The museum reinforces its commitment to excellence while consolidating its social vocation with new measures that strengthen ties with the local community and improve accessibility.
Free admission is extended to children under 18 every day and on Sunday afternoons, and remains on Tuesdays for people registered as residents of Bizkaia.
Bilbao, 1 October 2025. Itsasmuseum will update its pricing policy from Tuesday, 14 October 2025. This measure responds to the museum’s commitment to offering a cultural experience of quality and excellence, while guaranteeing its public service vocation and accessibility for all audiences.
What are the main changes?
The free admission periods will be extended and established as follows:
- Tuesdays will be free for people registered as residents of Bizkaia, a condition that must be accredited by means of a national identity card.
- As a new feature, on Sundays from 5 p.m. onwards, admission will be free for all visitors to the museum, thus guaranteeing one period of universal free admission per week.
This combination of free admission on Tuesdays for residents and Sundays for the general public brings Itsasmuseum into line with common practice at other leading museums both in the Basque Country and elsewhere in Spain, such as the Museu Marítim in Barcelona, which is free on Sunday afternoons, and the Prado Museum and Reina Sofía Museum, which offer free admission every day at closing time.
Furthermore, the pricing structure will be updated in line with other museums in our area, such as the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Aquarium in Donostia, as well as the Museu Maritim in Barcelona and the Museo del Cantábrico in Santander.
- Admission will be free for visitors under the age of 18 to promote access to the museum for young people, so the family rate will be eliminated.
- General admission will cost €10.
- Reduced admission, at €5, will be available for students, people with disabilities, retired people and parents of large families when visiting with their families.
- Enhanced accessibility: people with disabilities will be admitted at the reduced rate and their companion will be admitted free of charge when there is a proven need for support (equal to or greater than 33%).
- The conditions for schools, associations and groups remain unchanged.
The expected impact in different areas is as follows:
- Economic: a moderate increase in average revenue per visitor is expected, in line with the constant improvement of the cultural offering and visitor experience, and in line with other museums.
- Social: Access for young people is being promoted. By offering free admission to visitors under the age of 18, the museum is strengthening its position as a locally rooted institution with a strong commitment to our community, with free admission on Tuesdays reserved exclusively for residents of Bizkaia. Likewise, the admission fee for people with reduced mobility or other special needs is being improved in order to facilitate and promote their access to the museum.
- Operational: the new measures will enable more efficient management geared towards optimising the service, in line with the museum’s vision.
Calendar
These measures will be implemented on 14 October, which is free admission Tuesday for local residents.
