Campaign to recover Bizkaia’s maritime memory
Itsasmuseum is launching a citizen collaboration campaign to locate the original paintings of ships that form part of our maritime history. Can you help us?
Below are the paintings of ships that appear in the book La Industria Naval Vizcaína (The Vizcaya Naval Industry) (1917), written by Teófilo Guiard.
The images published in the book are in black and white, making it difficult to identify essential details such as flags, passwords, or other distinctive features. The museum’s goal is to locate these and other original paintings and take high-definition color photographs, thereby recovering relevant information that remains hidden today.
If you have any information or know the location of any of these paintings, please contact the museum using any of the following methods:
Information provided by Juan Mari Martín Rekalde, taken from the Escribanía de Marina (Maritime Registry). Provincial Historical Archive of Bizkaia.
This documentation is essential for continuing to piece together the history of the shipbuilding industry and preserving our region’s maritime heritage.
Together, we can keep our maritime memory alive!
