Apprentice pirate

Alumnos de Educación Infantil Realizando la Actividad Aprendiz de Pirata en Itsasmuseum

This activity gives infant education pupils a chance to enjoy the exciting world of sailing as they look for a treasure chest, acting out a reading of the story of the “apprentice pirate”, which stresses the values of equality, cooperation and friendship. Children then do handicrafts linked to the characters in the story, and can take their work home with them as a souvenir.

Carola, the mighty crane

The crane known as Carola is a symbol of the old Euskalduna shipyard, where over 300 vessels were built. But why is it called Carola? This educational workshop for infant education pupils teaches them the origins of the name of this famous, mighty red crane that now stands guard over Itsasmuseum.

The activity starts with a trail of clues through the permanent exhibition of the museum and ends with handicrafts.

The ship

Alumno de Educación Infantil disfrutando de la Actividad El Barco

This activity is to teach children the importance of transportation, particularly transportation by ship, in everyday life so as to help them understand the world that surrounds them. Children play the part of sailors and follow simple clues to find hidden treasure as they get to know the permanent exhibition. They are told the story of the famous Basque navigator Juan Sebastián Elkano and then build a sailing boat from a template, learning about its component parts as they do so.

I Live in the River

Actividad Vivo en la Ría Educación Infantil Itsasmuseum

More than 60 species of plants and animals currently live in the Bilbao river estuary.
The “I Live in the River” workshop discusses this ecosystem and its extraordinary recovery. The workshop begins by getting pupils to follow a number of clues, and ends with a handicraft exercise based on the sand goby, a tiny fish that lives in our river.

Guided tours and workshops

Infant and primary education pupils can get to know the permanent exhibition through a game where they solve a number of clues, followed by a handicrafts workshop. We also offer guided tours and workshops for secondary and upper secondary pupils.

Depending on the programme and weather conditions, some activities may be staged in our outdoor exhibition area.

Non-guided tours

On non-guided tours, seven dioramas created with Playmobil figures representing part of the contents of the permanent exhibition are available to children. This child-friendly resource is available at the museum’s learning centre, and encourages children to play as they learn.

Audio-guides

Free audio-guides are available to visitors at the Museum’s ticket office. If they prefer, visitors may also download the audio guide onto their smart phones. It is compatible with both Android and iOS operating systems.
